Befesa Zinc Duisburg
New-build Amenities Building with Integrated Office Use
Improving Working Conditions at a Traditional Location
At its traditional location in the south of Duisburg,
Befesa Zinc Duisburg GmbH recycles residues of the steel and galvanizing industries. Within the context of a plant structure analysis by aib, a suitable location was found for construction of a new amenities building despite the very confined space situation on the plant site. The target of the project was to create a contemporary changing room and shower facility, which because of the production
conditions had to take the form of a combination of
separate clean & soiled areas. In addition, the plan was to offer the staff a new and well-equipped rest area for their breaks. Because of the company’s development, new office spaces were also created in a separate part of the building.
Social Rooms with Architectural Aspirations
The oblique and strongly confined building space was exploited in full. In architectural terms, the building responds to that through a staggered floor layout, which is also expressed in the front view by phased floor levels. The colours of the facade support that geometric play on lines. The differentiated grey tones of the plastered facade are insensitive to dirt, as is the powerful red of the windows in the heavy industrial environment of the building. Inside, the building has been designed to be functional, sober and robust. Exposed concrete
dominates the transition between the entrance and the stairwell as the lead material.
Low Budget – High Performance
The entire building was realised with a minimum of
financial resources. Within the context of the plant
structure analysis, aib also developed an energy concept in which the available industrial waste heat is put to optimum use to meet the high heating needs for the wash and shower rooms and to heat the building in the winter. Minimised operating costs thus complement the optimised building cost.
